I arrived in Hermanus at a lovely house of my friends called "The Haven" - and it is one. Very relaxing, open space, you hear the ocean.
You can actually rent it on AirBnB. Find the link here http://abnb.me/EVmg/P4z71liR3C.
Hermanus Background info
Hermanus is a town on the southern coast of the Western Cape province of South Africa. It is famous for southern right whale watching during the southern winter and spring and is a popular retirement town. The whales can be seen from the cliffs in the town centre as early as June and usually depart in early December. They were once hunted in the nearby town of Betty's Bay, but are now protected to ensure the survival of the species. The Old Harbour Museum contains several exhibitions that explain the whaling industry, and the De Wetshuis Photo Museum houses an exhibition of photos by T D Ravenscroft that depicts the history of Hermanus.
Wine Tasting
We went to the following Wine Yards for wine tastings:
- Walker Bay, Sir Robert Standford (www.robertstanfordestate.co.za). We loved the 2014 Pinot Noir red wine. Try it out!
- Stanford, Royal Oke Wine Yard
- Newton Johnson (http://www.newtonjohnson.com/)
Southern most point in Africa
In L'Algulhas, we went to the southern most point in Africa which also divides the Atlantic from the Indian Ocean.
Art in Hermanus
Really nice art galleries with upcoming artists (www.hermanusfynarts.co.za). My favourite South African painters:
Adriaan S. De Lange
